On February 2, 2015, The PACE Group of Thomasville was one of 10 recipients for the Cultural Grant issued by the Economic Development Competitive Grant Program for Underserved and Limited Resources Communities issued by the North Carolina Department of Commerce Rural Economic Development Division.
The recent property donations (6 Main Street and 9 Salem Street) from Bob Callicutt of Callicutt Realty kickstarted PACE’s Historic Downtown Building Restoration Project. Many of Thomasville’s main street historic buildings require new roofs immediately. The structural roof supports have rotted and decayed, which has caused water leaks and damages. If the roofs are not repaired, then these buildings will be torn down and Thomasville will lose vestiges of its cultural history. The grant funding received will be used towards the roof repairs of these buildings.
Once the roofs are repaired, PACE will move forward to restore as economically feasible the original facade of the buildings.
The Historic Building Restoration Project is a priority this year for the PACE Group. The project is perhaps the most expensive and ambitious one that they have undertaken and PACE is appealing to the community for additional financial support. Past completed projects include, PACE Amphitheater, Farmers Market building, street lamp project, waste disposal cans, sidewalk enlargements and other enhancements.
The PACE Group regards the restoration of the historic downtown district as a means of revitalizing the city of Thomasville’s community, culture and economy.
